Garage doors are without doubt some of the most amazing yet subtle inventions we have. They have become everyday instruments in our lives and carry a lot more meaning than we give them credit.
Did You Know? – History Of Garage Doors
The modern garage doors originated with the barn doors. Ever since humans have tried to keep their animals safe from the weather and thieves using barns, doors at these barns were used to lock them in. One could argue that doors to protect vehicles instead of animals – the original garage doors if you will – date back to 450 BC, when chariots were kept in gatehouses. But garage doors as we understand them today did not develop until the rise of popularity of the motor vehicle. By 1902 so-called ‘float over doors’– large doors that would lift up over the vehicle – came into production. As cars developed, so did the garage doors. When electric motors began to come around, so did electric garage door openers.
The Types Of Garage Doors That Exist
The designs vary based on the garage needs. While there are single panel garage doors that basically consist of one single piece of door sliding or moving out of the way, there are also sectional garage doors. This means the door consists of various sections that fold the door out of the way. Another type of model are the roller doors. Like window rollers the simply roll up above the garage door.

There are many types of materials that can be used for garage doors, and it all depends of the door’s use. Steel doors have become common as well as aluminum doors. But when it comes to having more energy efficient doors that retain heat and keep out the cold, fiberglass and vinyl garage doors can be used. Wood materials are also common due to their aesthetics, but they require more maintenance and can be more expensive. In the end it all comes down to your personal needs, budget, and aesthetic desires.
How Garage Doors Work
The designs in garage doors have not changed much over the past 50 years. The biggest change have been in the insulation to retain heat, but the mechanical designs are still very much the same as on the doors developed around the 1900s. Running along two tracks, the door lifts up and away, sometimes folding and sometimes shifting out of the path of a vehicle and under the roof. They can be pushed or pulled into this position by hand or a handcrank, using a pulley and cable system that can make the sometimes heavy operation easier. Eventually an electric motor – or operator – was installed, by taking over the pulling and pushing part. With just the push of a button it became possible to operate a garage door. Adding to that a remote control, safety sensors and emergency stops, make the automated garage door opener an extremely useful household tool.
Why You Should Have A Garage Door
Unless you enjoy having to climb out of your car every time you want to close or open your garage door, having an electric garage door opener speaks for itself. At the same time it offers more protection for your vehicle, and in areas where the winters are more harsh also serves as an excellent insulation. There is no doubt that having a garage door improve your quality of life.
